What does “프러포즈” mean in Korean?
Korean borrowed English “propose” as 프러포즈, then shrank its meaning: it almost never covers proposing a plan or making a toast. It means specifically the romantic, ring-and-flowers marriage proposal. Ask someone to 프러포즈 and you’re asking them to pop the question. The older Sino-Korean word 청혼 (cheonghon) still exists for the formal “offer of marriage,” but 프러포즈 owns the swoony, event-like version.
The clip milks the near-rhyme: one character stumbles over “프러포즈?” and gets told “포즈 좀 취해봐” — “strike a pose.” 포즈 (pojeu) is the loanword for a photo pose, and 포즈를 취하다 is the set phrase “to strike/hold a pose,” so the whole gag lives in the gap between 프러포즈 and 포즈. Note the spelling wobble too: you’ll see both 프러포즈 and 프로포즈 in the wild, since Koreans are approximating English vowels. For the traditional, dictionary-formal term, reach for 청혼(하다) — literally “request marriage” (Sino-Korean 請婚). And 프러포즈 verbs up easily: 프러포즈하다 (to propose), 프러포즈를 받다 (to receive a proposal).
