What does “방관자” mean in Korean?
방관자 (banggwanja) isn’t a neutral onlooker — the word carries blame. It’s built from three Sino-Korean characters — 傍 “beside,” 觀 “watch,” 者 “person” — so it names someone standing to the side, watching without stepping in. Korean has plainer words for a spectator (구경꾼) or witness (목격자), but 방관자 specifically points a finger: the verb 방관하다 means to look on while doing nothing, and in Korea’s bullying discourse the 방관자 is counted as a party, not an innocent.
The choreography spells it out — 여러 명의 가해자, 다수의 방관자, 그리고 한 명의 피해자 (“several perpetrators, many bystanders, and one victim”) — placing the 방관자 on the same roster as the aggressor.
