What does “국기” (gukgi) mean in Korean?

Every country’s banner in this lesson gets one name: 국기 (gukgi), “national flag.” The word splits into two Sino-Korean building blocks — 국 (“nation,” the same 국 in 한국 “Korea” and 미국 “USA”) and 기 (“flag” or “banner”). Once you recognize 국, a whole family of “national ___” words opens up: 국가 (nation, also “national anthem”), 국적 (nationality), 국어 (national language).

The same 기 shows up in 태극기 (Taegeukgi) — the Korean flag’s own name, “Taegeuk” (the red-and-blue swirl at its center) plus 기. In the clip, a simple drawing game drills this directly: “어느 나라 국기예요?” (“Which country’s flag is this?”), as the colors of Sweden, Italy, Germany, and more get named and matched to their flags one by one.
