What does “차마” mean in Korean?
차마 is one of Korean’s most emotional little words, and it comes with a rule: it only ever appears in a negative sentence. It never means you’re unable — it means your heart won’t let you. 차마 못 보다 isn’t “can’t see”; it’s “couldn’t bear to look.” Whatever act follows is too painful, too cruel, or too shameful to go through with.
The scene opens on exactly this word: 차마 눈 뜨고 볼 수가 없다 — “I can’t bring myself to watch this with my eyes open.” Fittingly, 차마 is a fossil of 참다 (chamda), “to endure”: it’s the old infinitive of the verb to bear, first written down in 1447, so the adverb literally carries centuries of “enduring” inside it. Learn it in set pairs with a negative: 차마 못 하다 (couldn’t do it), 차마 말 못 하다 (couldn’t bring myself to say it), 차마 떠날 수 없다 (couldn’t bear to leave). Drop the negative and the sentence breaks — 차마 has no positive form.
