Why is the sea salty in Hebrew?
The Hebrew adjective מלוח (maluach) comes from the same three-letter root as מלח (melach), “salt.” That’s the root m-l-ḥ, and it produces a whole family: melach (salt), maluach (salty), malacha (saltworks), himliyach (to pickle), even the place name Yam HaMelach, the Dead Sea. Hebrew root-systems make this cluster impossible to miss.
This Davidson Institute kids' explainer answers why the sea is salty: rainwater turns slightly acidic with carbon dioxide, dissolves minerals out of rocks, and carries them to the ocean. The clip ends on לא מלוח סתם (“not salty for nothing”) and pivots to coral skeletons and salmon homing.
