What does “Ön” mean in Hungarian?
Ön is the polite “you” for strangers, officials and reception desks. Its trap is grammatical: it takes third-person verb forms, as if you were talking about the person rather than to them. Ön jön is “you are coming,” built exactly like “he is coming.” That distance is the point — Az jó Önnek? (“Is that alright for you?”) is respectful precisely because it stands back.
Hungarian offers a whole ladder: te (familiar), maga (formal, but it can sound curt or oddly intimate depending on who says it), Ön (neutral-formal and the safest choice for a learner), and the old tetszik construction used with the elderly. The greeting in this clip belongs to the same register — Jó napot kívánok is literally “I wish [you] a good day,” the full-dress version of Jó napot.
