What does “ne ess pánikba” mean in Hungarian?
Hungarian doesn’t “feel” panic, it falls into it: pánikba esik. The verb esik means to fall by itself, with no one pushing you — which captures panic perfectly, something that seizes you against your will. The everyday survival-tip phrasing is the negative command “ne ess pánikba!” — don’t panic! — using the -ba “into” ending to mark the state you’re falling into.
The clip’s water-rescue advice leans on it: “ne ess pánikba, mert a félelem... közel sodorhat a halálhoz” (don’t panic, because fear can sweep you close to death), then “maradj nyugodt” (stay calm).
