What does “без” mean when telling time in Russian?
When Russian counts down to the next hour, it uses без (literally “without”). So 6:50 becomes без десяти семь — “without ten, seven” — rather than “ten to seven.” The logic is subtraction: the approaching hour minus the remaining minutes. Once that click happens, every “X to Y” time in Russian falls into place with just one word.
The clip demonstrates this directly: Сейчас без десяти семь (“It’s 6:50”) sits alongside the plain digital reading 18:50 — both are in everyday use, but the без construction is the natural spoken countdown form. Без governs the genitive case, so the minutes change form: пять → без пяти, десять → без десяти, двадцать → без двадцати. The same preposition means “without” everywhere else in Russian (без молока — without milk), but on the clock it does the quiet arithmetic that English hands to the word “to.”
