What does “жесть” (zhest') mean in Russian internet slang?
Жесть (zhest') literally means “tin” or “sheet metal” in Russian. In modern spoken and online Russian, the word has become a one-syllable reaction meaning “intense,” “brutal,” or “no way.” Russians drop жесть into a sentence the way English speakers say “wild,” “insane,” or “savage.”
In this clip, a group tests how many people an inflatable mattress can hold. “Четыре человека? Жесть!” (“Four people? Wild!”). “Семь человек?” (“Seven people?”). The word lands every time someone climbs on. Zhest' shows up in the same Russian conversations as чел (“dude”) and рофл (“ROFL”), all part of the gen-z internet vocabulary.
