What does “белый хакер” mean in Russian?

Russian borrowed the English “white hat” colour metaphor wholesale: белый хакер (literally “white hacker”) means an ethical security researcher — someone who finds vulnerabilities and reports them rather than exploiting them. The term sits alongside the more literal белая шляпа (“white hat”) and is now common in Russian tech and media. The colour contrast with чёрный хакер (“black hacker,” i.e. criminal) makes the whole system click instantly.

The calque works because Russian tech English tends to translate the colour but drop the hat: where English says “white-hat hacker,” Russian just says “белый хакер.” Both sit beside the fully Russified phrase этичный хакер (“ethical hacker”), used in formal contexts. In the clip, the concept pays off with a sharp real-world punchline: a hacker who found a serious NASA vulnerability — for the second time — received no money (NASA runs no bug bounty) and no second Hall of Fame listing (you can only appear once). What he did get was an official letter of appreciation. He printed it, put it in a frame, and posted it on Twitter to show his friends. The price of благодарность — gratitude — turned out to be exactly that: a framed piece of paper.
