What does “par après” mean in French?
Par après means “afterwards, next.” It is standard in Belgian French and common in Quebec, but a Parisian would say ensuite or simply après. It is not a mistake creeping in: the phrase existed in general French and dropped out during the eighteenth century, surviving on the edges of the French-speaking world. Hearing it is a decent clue that a speaker is Belgian, Québécois or from the north.
Belgian French keeps a whole set of such survivals and inventions — septante and nonante for seventy and ninety, une drache for a downpour, savoir used where France uses pouvoir. Here par après just chains the steps: mash two overripe bananas, beat in two eggs, par après, ajoutez la farine. Worth pocketing too: c’est parti, the all-purpose “here we go” that opens and closes the video.
