What does “bluffant” mean in French?
Bluffant is the word a French reviewer reaches for when something is so good it almost fools you. It carries two meanings at once: genuinely impressive, and convincing enough to pass for the real thing. A vegan “bacon” that tastes like bacon, a copy you’d mistake for the original — both are bluffant. The unspoken compliment is “you could trick someone with this.”
It’s the present participle of bluffer, “to bluff,” borrowed from English card-game slang — so bluffant literally means “bluffing you.” Larousse gives both senses: qui impressionne (impressive) and qui fait illusion (creates an illusion). Reviewing a vegan fast food, the speaker says le goût est bluffant (“the taste is bluffant”) about the nuggets, then makes the subtext explicit with the faux ham: le faux jambon est ultra convaincant — tu peux clairement piéger quelqu’un avec ça (“the fake ham is super convincing — you could clearly trick someone with it”). It’s a high-frequency adjective in food, tech, and product reviews.
