Where does “T’as de beaux yeux, tu sais” come from?
T’as de beaux yeux, tu sais is the most quoted line in French cinema: Jean Gabin to Michèle Morgan in Marcel Carné’s Le Quai des brumes (1938), written by the poet Jacques Prévert. Nobody delivers it straight any more — it comes with a raised eyebrow, the way an English speaker might try “come here often?” Catching the wink is the whole point.
Morgan’s reply is Embrassez-moi — still on vous, which is half the charm. Prévert is said to have written the line for her famously pale eyes, replacing a draft that ran tu as de jolies jambes, tu sais. Two things learners can lift straight out: t’as is the spoken contraction of tu as, heard constantly and almost never written formally, and a tacked-on tu sais softens a statement into something offered rather than declared.
