What does “chaudron” mean in Quebec French?
In Québec un chaudron is simply a pot you cook in — the lidded thing on the stove holding the soup. In France the same word points at something bigger and older: the cast-iron cauldron slung over a fire, or a witch’s. So a Québec recipe telling you to prendre un chaudron is asking for a saucepan from the cupboard, not a piece of folklore, and hearing it that way saves a lot of confusion.
France would say une casserole for a saucepan and une marmite for a big stockpot. Québec kitchens use casserole as well, so chaudron is the one that gives the accent away.
