What does “j’en ai un” mean in French? (the pronoun “en”)
In this clip, one driver says his car has a TV. The other answers: “J’en ai une à l’arrière de ma voiture” — “I have one in the back of mine.” English speakers often say “j’ai une,” but French needs the small word “en” before the verb. It means “of them” and points back to the thing just mentioned. With any number you keep the number and add “en”: j’en ai un, j’en ai deux, j’en ai beaucoup.
From the clip: “Et une télévision ? J’en ai une à l’arrière de ma voiture.” — “And a TV? I have one in the back of my car.” The word “en” is a short pronoun that replaces “de + a thing” or a counted noun. You must include it when you use a number or quantity — without it, the sentence sounds wrong to French ears. A quick pattern: “Tu as un frigo ? — Oui, j’en ai un.” (Do you have a fridge? — Yes, I have one.) The number stays, but “en” must come first. It also covers “some / any”: “Tu veux du café ? — Oui, j’en veux.” (Do you want coffee? — Yes, I want some.) Memory tip: if you would say “of it,” “of them,” or “some” in English, French usually needs “en.”
