What does “soacră” mean in Romanian?
In Romanian, soacră is your mother-in-law — and few family words carry as much comic baggage. She is the stock figure of endless glume cu soacra (mother-in-law jokes), cast as meddling and impossible to please. So the punchline of “ce soacră minunată am” — “what a wonderful mother-in-law I have” — lands precisely because it flips a stereotype every Romanian knows by heart.
Soacră comes from Latin socrus, the same ancient kinship root behind Spanish suegra and, further back, German Schwieger and Russian свекровь. It anchors a whole in-law map: socru (father-in-law), noră (daughter-in-law), and ginere (son-in-law). Affectionate speakers often just say mamă or mamă-soacră to her face.
