What does “salud” mean in Spanish?

Salud literally means “health,” and Spanish uses it for two moments English keeps separate. When someone sneezes, you say ¡Salud! — that is “bless you.” When you raise a glass, you also say ¡Salud! — that is “cheers.” Both come from the same idea: you are wishing the other person good health.
