What does “se antoja” mean in Mexican Spanish?
Antojarse is the verb of sudden cravings, and it runs backwards: se me antoja is “I’m craving it” — grammatically, the food is tempting you, not you wanting it. Mexican cooks close recipes with ¿a poco no se antoja? (“doesn’t it make you hungry?”). The noun is antojo, a craving — and antojitos, “little cravings,” is Mexico’s own name for its street food.
The tinga de pollo recipe ends on the classic sign-off: tostadas stacked with chicken, crema and avocado, then “¿a poco no se antoja?” straight to camera. Everyday uses: se me antojan unos tacos (“I could really go for some tacos”), lo que se te antoje (“whatever you feel like”). Pregnancy cravings are antojos too.
