Why can Spanish say the same sentence three different ways?
“El convento de Mafra es grande. Grande es el convento de Mafra. De Mafra es grande el convento.” Three sentences, one meaning — Spanish word order is flexible enough to say the exact same thing three different ways, shifting which word lands first, and therefore which word gets the emphasis. All three describe the same enormous 18th-century Portuguese convent; only the rhythm and stress change.
Standard Spanish word order is subject-verb-object, same as English, but it’s a default, not a rule — constituents can move to the front for emphasis (a device called hyperbaton). That freedom is exactly why the description of Mafra’s 4,500 doors and windows and 880 rooms can keep circling the same simple fact — “it’s big” — without ever repeating a sentence outright.
