The same bárbaro that means “barbarian” is, in Argentina and Uruguay, an everyday yes to almost anything. Here the interviewer says bueno, bárbaro — “okay, great” — to move the conversation along. On its own, ¡bárbaro! means “awesome!”; as an adjective, una idea bárbara is “a fantastic idea.” A word for the savage hordes flipped into pure enthusiasm.

It also works as a plain intensifier, and there the old “wild, over-the-top” flavour still shows: hace un frío bárbaro means “it’s brutally cold,” un susto bárbaro “a huge fright.” Very common in the Río de la Plata and understood elsewhere, though other regions lean on genial or estupendo.
