What does “la cagaste” mean in Spanish?
La cagaste is blunt, vulgar Spanish for “you messed up” — literally “you shat it,” from cagar. It implies the mistake is bad enough that there’s no fixing it. A chef walking through a poached-egg recipe drops it as a warning about timing: si se rompe el huevo, la cagaste — “if the egg breaks, you’ve screwed it up” — no do-over, start again.
The verb is cagarla, and it conjugates like any other: la cagué (I messed up), la cagaste (you messed up), la cagó (he/she messed up). It’s crude but everyday, on par with English “screwed it up” rather than anything stronger. Mexican Spanish has a non-vulgar cousin for the same idea, regarla — literally “to water it” — used the same way: ¡ya la regó!, “he already messed up!”
