What does “me da la gana” mean in Spanish?
Dar la gana literally means “to give the urge,” but as an idiom it means “to feel like doing something purely because you want to” — and it almost always carries a defiant, don’t-question-me edge. In this clip, a kid facing pushback over makeup snaps ¿qué me importa? Yo hago lo que me dé la gana — “what do I care? I do whatever I feel like.” The phrase itself is the attitude.
It only works in the singular — nobody says “me dan las ganas” this way — and stacking on real, “for real,” makes it even blunter: no me da la realísima gana. It’s casual, sometimes outright rude depending on who’s hearing it, so it’s a phrase to recognize in the wild long before using it back at your own parents.
