Why do Swedish adjectives change with en and ett words?
Swedish nouns come in two kinds: en-words and ett-words. And the noun’s kind changes the adjective next to it. With an en-word, the adjective stays plain: en röd kopp (a red cup). With an ett-word, it gains a -t: ett rött äpple (a red apple). Same colour, just a different ending. About one in four Swedish nouns is an ett-word, so this comes up all the time.
The rule is easy to say but easy to forget when you’re talking fast: plain adjective for en-words, add -t for ett-words. The spelling can shift too — röd becomes rött, vit becomes vitt (the double t keeps the vowel short), brun just adds -t to make brunt. One word bends the rule on its own: liten turns into litet for ett-words (ett litet paket, a small package) and into små for plurals. The clip runs through this with everyday objects — “en liten kopp / ett litet paket” — so you hear the -t land each time the noun flips.
