What does “glassbil” mean in Swedish?

glassbil
Swedish word-building
“ice-cream van” — glass (ice cream) + bil (car)

Swedish builds new words by sticking two together like bricks: brand (fire) + bil (car) = brandbil, the fire engine. sopor (rubbish) + bil = sopbil, the rubbish truck. Then the sweet one: glass + bil = glassbil, the ice-cream van. Here’s the twist — glass has nothing to do with windows. It comes from the French word glace and just means ice cream. A lovely Swedish false friend.

In Swedish you join nouns with no spaces and no real limit, and the last word sets the gender. Sometimes a small -s- slips in to make it easier to say, as in glassbil (glass + s + bil). The clip runs four of these in a row — brandbil, polisbil, sopbil, glassbil — so you can hear the same pattern build word after word. And glassbilen is a real fixture of Swedish life: an ice-cream van that drives slowly through the neighbourhood playing a little jingle, so you can run out and buy some before it turns the corner.
