What does “羡慕” (xiànmù) mean in Chinese?
In English, “envy” carries a negative edge. In Chinese, 羡慕 (xiànmù) is far more neutral — even warm. Saying 我很羡慕你 (“I really envy you”) is a standard way to praise someone’s achievement, not to express bitterness. The word combines 羡 (“to desire what another has”) and 慕 (“to long for, admire”), and Chinese speakers use it freely on social media, in conversation, and in compliments to friends.
