Al bar: ordinare il caffè e prendere in giro

What does “senta, scusi” mean in Italian?
To get a stranger’s attention in Italy you don’t start with “excuse me” — you start with “listen.” Senta is the Lei imperative of sentire, and it pairs up with scusi into senta, scusi: the standard opener for a barista, a shop assistant, or someone on the street. With a friend the whole thing drops to senti, scusa. Mixing the two endings is the giveaway.
The endings swap by conjugation, which is exactly why they’re easy to garble: scusare is an -are verb, so formal is scusi and informal scusa; sentire is -ire, so formal is senta and informal senti. The polite pair therefore ends -a, -i and the friendly pair ends -i, -a. In the clip the order goes across the bar counter in one breath: “Senta, scusi. Due caffè bollenti.” — “Subito.”
