What does “credenza” mean in Italian?
In Italian, credenza is the cupboard or sideboard where you keep food, dishes, and pantry staples like rice or pasta. That surprises a lot of learners, because the same word also means a belief or trust, and it looks just like English “credence.” So when someone tells you the rice is “nella credenza,” they mean in the cupboard, not somewhere in their thoughts. Context, usually a kitchen, tells you which meaning is in play.
You hear it while two people sort out dinner: “E il riso? Nella credenza.” (And the rice? In the cupboard.) The two meanings actually share one root. Credenza comes from credere, “to believe,” and the noun first meant belief or trust. In noble households a servant would taste the food at a side table to prove it wasn’t poisoned, an act of trust called “fare la credenza.” The table where this happened took the name credenza, and over time the word slid to mean the cabinet itself. A plainer everyday word for a kitchen cupboard is mobile or armadietto, but credenza is very common for the dining/kitchen sideboard.
