What is the difference between azzurro and blu in Italian?

English speakers see one color and call it blue; Italian splits it into two basic words. Azzurro is the light, sky-blue of a clear day or the Mediterranean in sunlight, while blu is the dark, deep blue of a navy suit or the night sea. To an Italian these are as distinct as green and yellow, which is exactly why learners trip over treating “blue” as a single idea.

There is a grammar twist too: azzurro behaves like a normal adjective and agrees in gender and number (azzurra, azzurri, azzurre), but blu is invariable and never changes — una macchina blu, due macchine blu. Azzurro is also a point of national pride: Italy’s sports teams are gli Azzurri. A third shade, celeste, covers an even paler sky-blue.
