What does “sbottonare” mean in Italian?

sbottonare
Italian word-building
Stick “s-” on the front and the verb reverses: abbottonare (button up) becomes sbottonare (unbutton).

Italian has a tidy trick: put “s-” in front of many verbs and the action flips to its opposite. Bottone means button, so abbottonare is to button up; add the “s-” and sbottonare becomes to unbutton. The same move turns allacciare (to lace or fasten) into slacciare (to unlace). It doesn’t work on every verb, but once you notice it you can often guess a second “undo” verb from one you already know.

Getting dressed and undressed lines the pairs up side by side: “Mi abbottono la camicia. Mi sbottono la camicia” — I button my shirt, then I unbutton it. Moments later the same clip pairs mi abbasso / mi alzo i pantaloni (pull my trousers down / up) and mi allaccio / mi slaccio le scarpe (do up / undo my shoes). This “s-” is a reversing prefix that traces back to Latin ex- and dis- — the same “un-/dis-” idea English uses. It won’t flip every verb, but it’s a dependable pattern: caricare (to load) gives scaricare (to unload), fare (to do) gives sfare (to undo).
