What does “mischino” mean in Italian?
In this clip about parents filming their kids, someone calls a mishap-prone child mischino — “poor thing,” “poor guy.” Common across Sicily and southern Italy, mischino (also spelled mischinu) expresses gentle pity, often with a smile rather than real sorrow — it can describe someone who tripped, lost a game, or simply had bad luck.
The word traveled a long way to get there: it comes from Arabic miskīn (مسكين), “poor, needy,” which itself descends from the even older Akkadian muškēnum. The same Arabic root gave Spanish mezquino and French mesquin — though in standard Italian, meschino took a harsher turn, meaning “mean” or “petty” rather than “pitiable.”
