What does “khun yai” mean in Thai lakorn dramas?
Thai conversation builds respect through honorifics. คุณ (khun) is the everyday “Mr./Ms.,” but คุณใหญ่ (khun yai) literally adds “big” to make it “the senior khun” or “the head of the household.” Thai lakorns (prime-time dramas) use khun yai to flag the eldest, wealthiest, or most powerful member of a family before any plot detail is given.
